If you are looking for a way to add more horsepower to your car, one of the first hardware upgrades you can make is to the turbocharger. Your car might already come with a turbo, but different turbos deliver different results. An N54 turbo replacement, from a twin turbo to a single turbo, can dramatically affect performance and power. What is a turbocharger, and how does it work? Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is a Turbocharger?
A turbocharger is essentially a turbine that forces more air into the engine so that fuel can burn more efficiently. Compressed air, mixed with gasoline, burns better while creating more power in the engine, making it more fuel efficient while also generating more horsepower.
How Does It Work?
Turbochargers work by capturing exhaust gases and using them to spin the turbine. That turbine sucks air into the engine, compressing it and increasing the PSI inside the engine. If your car already has a turbo, like the BMW N54 engine, you might want an N54 turbo upgrade. This can increase airflow while making your turbo more resistant to heat. More heat means less dense air and less oxygen. A heat-resistant turbo with increased airflow can make for a potent upgrade, giving you more horsepower than a stock turbo.
Single vs. Twin Turbo
There are different types of turbos, but the two most common are the single and twin. Single turbos can achieve higher horsepower at the top-end, but have more turbo lag. Twin turbos give more power on the low end, with better response time, but are more complex and offer lower overall horsepower.
Other Considerations
Chasing more horsepower means you need to factor in a few considerations. Use higher-octane gas, at least 91, as turbos can otherwise suffer engine knocking and damage. On a BMW, because you are adding more power, you might need a more reliable BMW crank hub, as the stock hub is known to slip at higher horsepower, especially in the S55 engine.
